OpenFleet-Ornikar collaboration

Lucas Caroff, Partnership and Fleet Manager at Ornikar, shares his feedback after two years of partnership with OpenFleet. This collaboration has enabled Ornikar, an online driving school, to offer its independent teachers a fleet solution equipped with dual controls, facilitating their professional activity. Discover the positive impacts and benefits of this long-term collaboration.

Why did Ornikar choose carsharing? What were the motivations? And above all, what we’re trying to find out here is what was the problem you were trying to solve?

Ornikar is a platform that connects independent teachers with students looking to pass their driving license and highway code. In other words, Ornikar is an online driving school that enables students to pass their code and driving license via teachers working all over France. Imagine the Uber model on the scale of a driving school. Teachers are self-employed, with auto-entrepreneur status. They own their own vehicles, which means they are subject to the vagaries of nature. If their vehicle breaks down, or if they have to wait for their car to be delivered a little later than planned, they can’t work. When we realized this two years ago, we thought it would be a good idea to set up a fleet of cars to be made available to our teachers and equipped, as they expect, with dual controls to enable them to carry out their work. We decided to order around fifty cars at the time, and to make them available to as many teachers as possible in France, we decided to fit them with telematics boxes. That’s why we used OpenFleet to install all our equipment, so we could have all these boxes.

How do you train users to use the platform?

When they rent our cars, we send them information by e-mail so that they can understand how the system works. This type of instruction is sufficient, because the user’s task is limited solely to registering on the OpenFleet platform. We take charge of the rest of the process.

It’s been two years since Ornikar implemented our car-sharing solution. What are the biggest impacts you’ve noticed so far?

The real impact we’re going to have is the transformation we want to push on teachers to convert to electric. There’s nothing like a fleet of rental cars to help you test drive an electric car and convince as many teachers as possible that it’s a good solution for their business. This is already a kind of laboratory for us.

What’s more, the use of the fleet – which we make available to each user for a period of 2 months – is optimized. Since the beginning of the year, the fleet has been used for around 6,000 cumulative days – which has a real impact in terms of economic efficiency. On the one hand, the alternative for teachers would be to rent a car at a price that is generally twice that of our car-sharing solution. On the other hand, a teacher wishing to renew his contract with another leased vehicle or another manufacturer would have to wait for delivery of the vehicle. Given today’s supply problems in the industry, this can mean up to three months of downtime with no activity possible.

What can we say about user satisfaction?

Satisfaction is measured via two biases. Satisfaction with the support provided by our operators, who answer teachers’ questions, and satisfaction with the use of the service itself. We send out a short survey at the end of the vehicle rental to measure their satisfaction. Questions concerned the ease of use of the OpenFleet tool, the support role of Ornikar’s dedicated operator, and other issues related to the use of vehicles. In 2022, we have an average satisfaction rating of 8.2 out of 10, based on over 300 responses.

What is your overall assessment of the collaboration with the OpenFleet teams in the various aspects of the project?

The relationship is constructive and the experience good. In the beginning, it’s normal to have challenges, but in two years we’ve seen impressive improvements in the reliability of the service and in the ease of use of certain OpenFleet tools. We’re extremely satisfied. We still have direct links with the teams, even with a very high activity rate. We get to meet face-to-face, and that’s a real added value compared to other companies in the same sector. It’s a team that’s very present for us. OpenFleet offers a direct feed via Slack, for example, which is something not everyone offers. The site’s ergonomics are superior to those of other competitors.

Why would you recommend OpenFleet?

Listening to the customer is very important. The service is efficient. Small problems are always taken seriously and solved. It’s a complete service. The reliability of our gearboxes has improved steadily. So far, we’re extremely satisfied.
